Dear Good,

I wish you could have been with me a few years ago when I met a little girl named Ruhama in Ghana. The Carter Center was helping local people treat the last remaining cases of Guinea worm disease — a scourge that has plagued mankind for millennia.

I was trying to amuse and distract 6-year-old Ruhama as a health worker gently removed a 3-foot-long Guinea worm from the poor child’s leg. I was only partly successful because the process is excruciating.

But there is good news. First, Ruhama recovered completely. Thank you for that. Second, Ruhama was one of the last children in Ghana to be infected with Guinea worms! The World Health Organization certified Ghana to be Guinea worm free in 2015! This is amazing.

MAKE THE WORLD
A BETTER, SAFER PLACE »
THIS IS HOW YOU’RE HELPING FINISH OFF GUINEA WORM
Your generosity today means Carter Center-trained health care volunteers will continue to have the resources to travel to even the most remote villages, teaching how Guinea worm spreads, how to keep away from contaminated water sources, and how to use pipe filters to avoid infection. And it means our staff and community volunteers can locate and track every last case and care for sufferers until Guinea worm is no more.
In 1986, an estimated 3.5 million people suffered from Guinea worm disease. Last year, there were fewer than 60 cases, and we are on target this year for fewer than 40. Only Chad, Ethiopia, Mali, South Sudan, and Angola have reported any cases at all.

If we make a final push now, someday very soon, someone will be the last one treated for Guinea worm disease in the history of the world! Will you help us make this happen?

Sincerely,

Jimmy Carter
Co-Founder and Trustee
The Carter Center

P.S. We’re so close to making a world where no one suffers 3-foot-long Guinea worms as Ruhama did. Your generosity will help end this disease forever, and it will empower people with so many other tools to improve their lives. Thank you!
