SOUTH SUDAN: DOCUMENTING THE ROAD TO ZERO

The South Sudan Guinea Worm Eradication Program continues to redouble surveillance efforts and interventions following the premature report of zero Guinea worm cases in 2017.

CHAD

Chad has reported 11 confirmed human cases of Guinea worm disease (36% contained), 1,366 infected dogs (85% contained), 60 infected domestic cats (89% contained), and one infected wild cat (uncontained) in January-September 2020.

ETHIOPIA

The Ethiopia Dracunculiasis Eradication Program has reported nine confirmed human cases of Guinea worm disease (all contained), eight infected domestic cats (all contained), three infected dogs (all contained), and four infected baboons (uncontained) from January through early October 2020.

MALI

Mali has reported one confirmed human case of Guinea worm disease (uncontained) and eight confirmed infected dogs (four contained) from January – September 2020. The human case is a 15-year-old girl, whose worm emerged at her home in Konobougou town in Baraoueli district of Segou Region.

ICCDE MEETING

The International Commission for the Certification of Dracunculiasis Eradication held its 14th annual meeting virtually on October 8, 2020, under the chairmanship of Dr. Joel Breman. Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organization, greeted participants by video.

NEW VICE-PRESIDENT FOR HEALTH PROGRAMS

Kashef Ijaz, M.D., M.P.H., has been named vice president for health programs at The Carter Center, effective October 1. At The Carter Center, he will provide leadership for programs working to prevent or eliminate six tropical diseases in 18 nations, as well as efforts to improve mental health care in the United States and abroad.
