Today is World Human Rights Day, the day we honor The Universal Declaration of Human Rights, signed on Dec. 10, 1948.
Dear Good, Today is World Human Rights Day, the day we honor The Universal Declaration of Human Rights, signed on Dec. 10, 1948. The declaration guarantees every person the right to equality, democracy, due process, and safety from violence. It’s a remarkable and historic document. But people don’t live on paper. That’s why your support for our work means so much. Your gift in honor of World Human Rights Day helps make the promises of the declaration real. You help the most oppressed and vulnerable people in the world elect their own leaders, voice opinions without fear, gain access to justice, and remove the entrenched barriers that prevent them from living in peace. Our human rights work has a special focus on the rights of women. As, too often, religion has been used to justify gender-based human rights abuses, our work includes partnering with religious leaders whose influence is crucial to changing harmful social norms. | | | I am inspired by the brave women who stand up to insist on their rights. At our Human Rights Defenders Forum last year, Halimat Jibril (pictured above), founding member of the Federation of Muslim Women’s Association of Nigeria and part of the Carter Center’s global network, said, "If people understand the concept of human rights and are able to apply it to their lives, then there will be more peaceful coexistence. Then government can cut down on the bills for buying arms and ammunitions. Then development can take place because everybody's living peacefully and they're able to go about their normal business fully."
Please make a generous World Human Rights Day gift to make Halimat’s wise vision of the future a reality! Sincerely,
Jimmy Carter Co-Founder and Trustee The Carter Center
P.S. This is the time of year when many people make their most meaningful donations to support causes they care about. As we wish and pray for joy and peace, a gift to foster human rights is especially meaningful. Please be as generous as you can.
