Dear Good, Today marks the 70th anniversary of a breakthrough moment for the human race: the adoption of The Universal Declaration of Human Rights by the United Nations. For the first time in history, the rights to equality and justice and freedom from slavery and oppression were codified in a single statement, drafted by representatives of different legal and cultural backgrounds from every region of the world. And today, to confirm the degree to which they captured the beliefs and yearnings of all of our planet’s peoples, this declaration remains the most translated document on earth, available in more than 500 languages. Like you, The Carter Center believes in the universality of these rights, and we have a determination to secure them for everyone. We need your help to continue strengthening human rights protections around the world. | | This Congolese woman remembers her feeling of despair after her family’s land was seized by a mining company, leaving her with few choices of a livelihood. Now with no land for farming, she supports her five sons and four daughters by making and selling a sweet drink called Munkoyo. Her story is a familiar one in the mineral-rich Democratic Republic of the Congo, where your support is helping the Center increase the transparency of the multinational mining companies and reduce the exploitation of Congo’s citizens. |
| When you make a gift today, you will help: - Bring hope to millions of people across the world who live with governments or caste systems that prevent them from rising out of poverty or having access to justice or, worse yet, systems that make them victims of violence.
- Support in-person and online forums that hundreds of human rights activists use to share best practices and make measurable improvements in their communities.
- Increase international publicity for human rights activists so they can advance their work and be safeguarded from violent retaliation.
- Stop the exploitation of people in the Democratic Republic of the Congo by mining companies eager to profit from the country’s rich mineral deposits, and you will support the Human Rights House in the DRC’s capital, Kinshasa, which is a vital nerve center for technical support and training in human rights investigation, conflict resolution, and advocacy.
- Continue Mobilizing Faith for Women and Girls, the Center’s ongoing project to enlist key faith leaders in correcting the inaccurate interpretations of religious doctrines and traditional belief systems that have long been used to justify mistreatment of females.
- Teach women and men in post-conflict Liberia that they have legal rights and how to access their justice system.
- Continue the election monitoring that has already helped improve this defining element of democracy in 39 countries around the world, giving people improved access to self-rule and enhancing the trust between citizens and their governments that is crucial if a democracy is to prosper.
| When you make a gift today, words on paper will become more than a mere promise, and you will help change lives forever. So please be as generous as you can be to advance human rights and put our world on the path to peace. Sincerely,
Jimmy Carter Co-Founder and Trustee The Carter Center
P.S. As we celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, I hope you will be as generous as you can be in supporting the efforts of The Carter Center. Thank you!
