Dear Good, Two neglected diseases, trachoma and river blindness, are causing some of the world’s poorest and most forgotten people to go blind. These are entirely preventable diseases that afflict the most vulnerable among us — causing agonizing pain and long-term disability. The victims of these diseases can no longer go to school, farm for their food, or care for their families. But you, Good, can change this. With a single act of kindness today, you will empower the world’s poorest with preventive education, antibiotic treatments, and surgical interventions so they can return to work and school, freeing themselves from the fears of disabling pain and economic calamity. At same time, the health education you help deliver to these impoverished communities can reduce the social stigma and shame associated with river blindness and trachoma. | | River blindness is a parasitic infection that can cause intense itching, skin discoloration, rashes, and eye disease that often leads to permanent blindness. The parasite is spread by the bites of infected black flies that breed in rapidly flowing rivers. Worldwide, an estimated 120 million are at risk of being infected and 270,000 have been blinded by the disease. The Carter Center works to eliminate river blindness in Brazil, Ethiopia, Nigeria, Sudan, Uganda, and Venezuela. | | Trachoma is a bacterial disease and the world's leading cause of infectious blindness. In communities lacking basic hygiene and sanitation, it is easily spread from person to person through eye-seeking flies, hands, and clothes. Repeated infection leads to scarring and inward turning of the eyelid — a very painful condition called trichiasis — which causes blindness. Of the 190 million people at risk for trachoma, most are children, and women are almost twice as likely as men to develop trichiasis. The Carter Center works to control and prevent trachoma in Ethiopia, Mali, Niger, Sudan, South Sudan, and Uganda. | | There is an additional reason to act today — the Hilton Foundation will DOUBLE your gift when you make a donation to help eliminate blinding trachoma in Mali and Niger, two of the world’s most impoverished nations.
With this special match, $25 becomes $50, $50 becomes $100, $100 becomes $200, and so on. Doubling your gift means TWICE the impact! With your help now, we will use proven strategies to alleviate the unnecessary suffering of the millions of people who are daily at risk of contracting river blindness or trachoma, or already are afflicted with the symptoms of the diseases. These people, the poorest of the poor, have nowhere else to turn. You can help not only to save them from losing their precious sight, but also fight the cycle of poverty caused by neglected diseases. Thank you for being a hero to these people so desperately in need and giving them a chance to better their lives. Sincerely,
Jimmy Carter Co-Founder and Trustee The Carter Center
