Dear Good, We share a hope with every person on this earth: the simple wish to enjoy good health. For millions of the world’s poorest and most powerless people, that often is too much to ask. Instead, they live in fear of what the future may bring, and those already afflicted with neglected diseases struggle each day with terrible pain and stigma. Were it not for The Carter Center and donors like you, they might continue to suffer the agonies inflicted on them by diseases like Guinea worm, trachoma, river blindness, and others — because the effort to prevent or treat them was too expensive, too difficult, or simply “impossible.” | | Your gift will help support disease prevention and treatment efforts such as the simple eyelid surgeries that treat the advanced stage of trachoma. As shown above in Mali, these 20-minute surgeries save eyesight and end the agony of eyelashes scraping corneas. Your support also will help Carter Center-trained community health volunteers distribute antibiotics, educate people about the importance of hygiene and regular screening, supply filters for drinking water, and so much more. Our strategies are simple and the tools are low cost, but implementing them on the massive scale required is impossible without your help. | | But by making a gift now, Good, you can help us continue to do the impossible every day and relieve untold suffering. You will equip people in need with the tools and knowledge to free themselves from neglected diseases that torment their communities. Carter Center-trained volunteers and health workers already have treated or saved millions from trachoma infection. And now we are close to ending Guinea worm disease forever — down from 3.5 million cases a year when we began our work in 1986 to only 30 last year. I know that the last cases will be the hardest to find and contain. But I am confident your support will help us finish the job with the same determination that has brought us to the verge of eliminating river blindness from the Americas. In the same way, your support has enabled our steady progress against other preventable or treatable diseases, including trachoma, schistosomiasis, lymphatic filariasis, and malaria. And it is not only the agony of illness that you are helping to end. When you make a gift, you are helping adults return to their livelihoods and children return to school. A terrible cycle of poverty finally can be interrupted. It’s difficult to thank you for your support in any way comparable to the good you have done. All I can say is that your partnership sustains what we do and is the reason the pain and desperation of so many millions have been replaced by hope. So thank you, and I hope you can be generous in helping our work continue. Sincerely,
Jimmy Carter Co-Founder and Trustee The Carter Center
