Synopsis of Recent Developments
CHAD CONTINUES TO REDUCE DOG INFECTIONS AND HUMAN CASES

As of the end of September, Chad had provisionally reported 706 infected dogs (81% contained) so far in 2021, which is a 51% reduction compared to the 1,427 infected dogs reported during the same period of 2020. Chad also reported 56 infected cats (80% contained) in January-September 2021, compared to 63 infected cats in January-September 2020. Chad provisionally reported six laboratory-confirmed human cases in January-September 2021, marking a 45% decrease from the 11 human cases that Chad reported in the same period of 2020. Of the six cases, four (67%) were contained.

MALI: DOG INFECTIONS INCREASE

In addition to two confirmed cases of Guinea worm disease in humans, Mali has also reported 12 confirmed and three provisional infections in dogs in January-October 2021.

ETHIOPIA: SPOTLIGHT ON INFECTED CATS

The Pugnido Refugee Camp in Ethiopia’s western Gambella Region detected one domestic dog with a Guinea worm infection in 2017; five domestic cats and one domestic dog with Guinea worm infections in 2018; no Guinea worm infections in 2019; eight cats and two humans with Guinea worm infections in 2020; and one provisional cat infection so far in 2021. These are the only Guinea worm infections ever detected in domestic cats in Ethiopia.

ANGOLA

In September, Angola’s Guinea Worm Eradication Program continued to monitor progress and expand community-based surveillance in areas at risk. It conducted supervisory visits to four municipalities, including three endemic (Namacunde, Cuvelai, Cuanhama) and one non-endemic (Ombadja) areas. More than 3,360 community members were sensitized in 17 villages and cloth filters were provided to 403 families.

ICCDE

The International Commission for the Certification of Dracunculiasis Eradication met virtually on October 12, 2021. The meeting heard updates on the status of priority certification preparations for the Democratic Republic of Congo, which has not reported a case of Guinea worm disease since 1958, and Sudan, which reported its last indigenous case in 2013. The commission also heard updates on the status of Guinea worm infections in the five endemic countries, surveillance in Cameroon and the Central African Republic, and related research.

Trachoma Program Review
After a year of challenges and hardships worldwide caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Carter Center’s 2021 Trachoma Control Program Review focused on the importance of partnership and resilience in the fight against the world’s leading infectious cause of blindness. As a result, the Carter Center-assisted programs were highly productive, conducting 8,274 trachomatous trichiasis (TT) surgeries, distributing more than 700,000 doses of antibiotics, and building 14,252 latrines.

Sudanese Doctor Calls Vision ‘the Most Important Thing’
Dr. Balgesa Mohamed Elkhair Babiker Elshafie has dedicated her life to helping her fellow Sudanese. She has overseen over 10 million antibiotic treatments distributed through mass drug administration campaigns; more than 10,000 people receiving sightsaving surgery; many program evaluation surveys across the country; program expansion into the Darfur region following a decade of insecurity; and enormous advocacy efforts to increase access to water and sanitation in trachoma-endemic communities.

Committee Recommends Status Changes for Nigerian States
The 12th meeting of the National Onchocerciasis Elimination Committee of Nigeria was held May 18–19, 2021, in a virtual format due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The committee recommended that Plateau and Nasarawa states be classified as “onchocerciasis transmission eliminated.”
