Good, the 2021 Carter Center Weekend Broadcast starts tonight at 8 p.m. EDT! Join us early at 7:45 p.m. to submit your photo for our eagle collage.

No registration is needed for this free, live event.

Synopsis of Recent Developments
73% FEWER ANIMAL CASES

Provisional surveillance data for January-April 2021 shows 73% fewer animal infections worldwide in January-April 2021 compared to the same period in 2020, reporting just 188 provisional animal infections in January-April 2021 compared to 684 animal infections during the same period in 2020.

Additionally, there were four confirmed human cases of Guinea worm disease reported worldwide, which is a 76% reduction in cases compared to 17 human cases reported in the same period of 2020.

CHAD

Chad reported a 73% reduction in animal infections in Chad in January-April 2021 compared to the same period in 2020. The 2021 animal infections in Chad included 182 dog infections (81% contained) and 4 cat infections (75% contained). Chad reported three confirmed human cases (67% contained), one in February and two in April 2021, which is a reduction of 63% from the eight human cases Chad reported in January-April 2020.

ETHIOPIA

Ethiopia reported one human case of Guinea worm disease (contained) in January-April 2021, in Gog district of Gambella Region in February.

MALI

Mali’s Guinea Worm Eradication Program reported a confirmed infected dog (contained) in Macina town/Segou Region in January 2021. The MGWEP recently detected a suspect Guinea worm infection (contained) in a dog in Barakabougou village of Markala district/Segou Region on May 5, 2021. The dog was tethered two days before the worm began emerging and a specimen is being sent to CDC.

It is with very heavy hearts that we report the passing of Dr. Nabil Aziz Mikhail, Country Representative of The Carter Center to Sudan and former National Program Coordinator of Sudan’s Guinea Worm Eradication Program on May 18, 2021.

2021 Carter Center Weekend

In 2020, the Carter Center Weekend went virtual. With more than 1,000 Carter Center supporters like you bidding in the auction and watching the broadcast show, it was the largest event ever and more than we imagined it could be. And we hope that this year will be even better!

The 2021 Carter Center Weekend will begin when the auction opens for bids at 9 a.m. EDT on Monday, June 21, and close when bidding ends at 11 p.m. EDT on Saturday, June 26, after the broadcast show. View the Schedule »
