Reminder to send a gift for Mother's Day

Your gift will help people like Violeta Jax Ixcoy.
This Mother's Day, honor your mom with a special gift.
Dear Good,
Mother’s Day is May 12, and you can honor the special women in your life with a unique gift that will bring hope to the world's poorest and most neglected people. Now, for a limited time, you can send a special eCard with one of my original paintings or choose from other eCard options.

Mother's Day eCard
Your Gift Will Help People Like Violeta

Women like Violeta Jax Ixcoy who live in poverty in developing nations face much greater challenges than men in being able to exercise democratic rights like the right to access government information. For these women, public offices can be too far away, bus tickets too expensive, and men in their household can refuse to let them travel.

Violeta lives in the village of Pasajcab, Guatemala, where she helps her mom take care of her six younger siblings and serves as the president of the village’s women’s group. Every year, the municipality that oversees Pasajcab sets money aside for women’s projects. Each community gets to decide what sort of project it wants. Violeta and her group asked for laying hens, knowing they could bring the village extra nutrition and spare eggs to sell at market.

Months after their request, the chickens still hadn’t arrived, so Carter Center information liaison Magdalena Leon stepped in to help. She taught the women how to file an official request about the hens’ whereabouts, and most importantly the women learned about their civic rights.

Several weeks later, the hens turned up — two for every family in the village. Pasajcab families now have more food on the table and can supplement meager incomes.

“We really didn’t know what the right to access to information was until Magdalena came to our community,” Violeta said. “Now, women are less afraid to raise their voice.”

Please make a gift now to empower more women like Violeta »

With a gift to The Carter Center in honor of your mother, you will help improve the lives of the most neglected and impoverished people in the world — bringing families, communities, and entire nations sustainable solutions to end suffering caused by disease, conflict, and human rights abuses.

Thank you for making this Mother's Day extra special for the important women in your life and for the grateful people you will have indelibly touched with your kindness.

Sincerely,

Jimmy Carter
